As society and technology changes so does the way we as individuals respond to various types of communications. With a country always stuck on their smartphone 24/7, it's quite easy to see that young people, especially gravitate towards visual communication. This visual stimulation can include logos, and advertisements with pictures. It's much easier to gather and retain information just by simply glancing at a photo or logo or other icon. For better or worse, this is how our society has changed. People have become more visual learners and communicators with each other. Take texting for example, emojis are used in place of words. Certain emojis when grouped together can mean an entire sentence. With colorful little icons, it's easy to see why visual communication is popular among teens and college aged individuals. This can also tie into written communication. Many have stopped using complete sentences when texting or even writing letters. Instead, terms like, “LOL”, “TTYL” or “OMG” are used quite commonly to represent an entire thought. We are reverting back to visuals over an alphabet system. This wouldn't be possible of course without the number one visual tool, the smartphone. A very powerful device capable of producing logos, and written messages at the click of a button.
There are a plethora of logos that trigger a stimulus within us due to their powerful meaning and simple look. An example of this is the Black Lives Matter logo which we have seen in most recent months. A black fist raised in the air is all it is. With the logo people know the story behind it, and the fight we have left to fight. The raised hand is clenched in a fist which represents determination. The hand is colored black to associate with the mistreatment of black people. Another logo is the popular recycle logo. This logo shows three arrows arranged in a repetitive cycle. The message is seen within embedded within this picture. The logo is going in a continuous cycle which represent the three steps needed to: recycle, reduce and reuse. It is also green which corresponds with being green for your community. The recycle logo is a logo that visually communicates a positive message. The last is, the Grammy’s. This logo is represented as a miniature gramophone on a square base. The word grammy comes from “gramaphone” hence the name of the annual music award shows the “Grammys”. Even though the majority of people these days no longer use gramophones, it was used to listen to music/vinyl records. Even many years later these awards are given out as a reminder of how far music has come.
The year 2021, has just begun and logos aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Even if we try to avoid them, they're everywhere. All around us in movie theaters, billboards, streaming services and our phones produce hundreds of thousands of logos at our faces. However, all these logos have one thing in mind though: to communicate and convey a message to us visually.
